Full Plate Fuels Fight Against Food
By: Haleigh Staalner
Full Plate, a local food recovery organization, fuels the fight against food insecurity in Athens, Georgia one donation at a time.
Established in 1987 with a mission to reduce hunger in the Athens-Clarke County area, Action, Inc.’s Full Plate program is tasked with collecting prepared and fresh food donations from local area restaurants, grocery stores, and cafeterias.
The donations are then distributed to local homeless shelters and other organizations that serve disadvantaged and hungry individuals.
The USDA defines food insecurity as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.”
Furthermore, the Georgia Mountain Food Bank estimates that nearly “17.7 percent of the people living in Georgia are food insecure; that’s nearly 1.78 million people.”
